If you're in Geosciences and have ever tried explaining your research to a non-technical audience, you've probably defaulted to saying, "I make maps." But there are many reasons to move beyond this simplified explanation.

Whether you're aiming to publish academic papers or make a practical impact in a world full of challenges, it's essential that your work is properly understood.

In this video, we follow students of Valentijn Venus, a lecturer at ITC and expert in Science Communication, as they embark on one of his favourite exercises: a bus tour around the Twente Region. During this tour, students meet local non-tech entrepreneurs and dive deep into explaining how their geo skill-set could benefit these entrepreneurs' businesses.

What do their interactions with winemakers, brewers, and bakers teach them about how they make themselves understood?

Learn their go-to tips and find the answer to whether they've discovered new ways to explain their research without settling for "I make maps".
